Various types and benefits of irrigation systems

Irrigation is the procedure of artificially applying water to the plants and soil. This process is usually used in the agricultural field for re-vegetation, dust suppression, and maintaining the farms. It is widely used in various fields for different reasons.

There are many types of irrigation such as:

Surface – In this type, water moves and spreads over the surface of land to wet it with gravity. It is also called flood irrigation because in this process, the soil is infiltrated by flooding. It is sub-divided into border strip, furrow, and basin.

Localized – In this system, water is distributed by a network of pipes under low pressure. There is a pattern in it, which helps in providing good amount to each plant.

Drip – With this system, which is also known as micro or trickle irrigation, water drips slowly directly to the roots of plants. It delivers drop by drop near the roots and reduces the evaporation.

Sprinkler – In this type, water is spread by overhead high-pressure sprinklers. Many pipes are located in the center of land and it rotates the pressure into all directions. Center pivot is a type of sprinklers.

In the manual system, watering is done by people with the help of buckets etc.

There are many benefits of irrigation:

In the agriculture field, water is necessary for crops. Farmers cannot depend only on the rain for watering. This system fulfils this need of farmers.

It increases the production of crops. With proper watering, the production can be increased.

With the increase production, the revenue of the farmers will also increase.

Most of these systems can preserve lots of water. An automatic system can save a lot of precious water. If someone tries it by hand, most of the amount of water is wasted.

If you try watering by hand, it will take time. In the agriculture field, this procedure can take a lot of time. That is why farmers use this system to save their time.

It can also help in reduction of weeds. It applies only the necessary amount to the places where it is needed. It can reduce the amount of weeds.

With proper watering and reduced weeds, the growth of crops will be increased.

It also decreases the hard work and labour.

In different states, whether it is an agricultural state like Florida or others like Connecticut  irrigation holds an important place in various fields. With the crops like corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton, potatoes, grapes and many others, it is an important part of agriculture.
